Women's football arrives at the Vatican, with what can be considered in all respects the women's national football team of the Holy See. The Vatican representative, announced in recent weeks, made its debut yesterday afternoon, Sunday 26 May, in the sports center of the Knights of Columbus, against the Roma women's team of Roma.
The girls that make up the team are all Vatican employees or wife and daughters of staff of the Holy See, plus some players from the Bambino Gesù hospital team who joined for this 11-a-side football match. «We are born in an amateur way - he tells the attacker and captain of the Vatican Eugene Tcheugoue - and playing together represents for us above all a way to get to know and be together ».
The young soccer player, a graduate in theology and a native of Cameroon, has no doubts about the great important symbolism of the team: "Many of us are mothers even before they are employees or at least daughters and wives, so in the first place for us is the metaphor of football as a gym of life. Sport in general - says Eugene Tcheugoue - conveys a fundamental message, both for the new generations and in particular for women ".
